A PLACE WHERE YOUR CHILD IS UNDERSTOOD AND Supported THROUGH EVERY CHALLENGE.

Therapy for Children and Teens with Anxiety, OCD, or ADHD in Bucks County, PA and Online

Is your child struggling to find their calm, stay on task, or feel confident in their own skin?

Maybe your teenager is struggling with schoolwork, and despite your best efforts to help, these attempts only seem to escalate into larger conflicts instead of fostering solutions. Or perhaps your child is consumed by invasive, distressing thoughts they can't dismiss without their daily “confessions” to you. You might notice your child has new physical symptoms like persistent headaches or stomachaches that defy medical explanation. Or maybe your teen's drive for perfection has spiraled into outbursts reminiscent of their early childhood whenever routines or plans are disrupted—like insisting on staying up late to finish homework, even when it's bedtime. Despite these challenges, you know your child is still there, but something isn't right—they're not feeling like the best version of themselves.

Whatever it is that your child is experiencing, the impact is becoming apparent in every facet of their life:

  • Bedtime has become a struggle; your child can't seem to fall asleep on their own anymore, often needing you there to finally settle down, just like when they were younger.

  • Small frustrations and minor irritations quickly escalate into large outbursts and disproportionate reactions.

  • Disheartening comments slip from their lips—expressions like “I’m stupid” or “I can’t do anything right” reveal deep-seated feelings of inadequacy.

  • Simple daily tasks become herculean efforts; staying organized, completing homework, or remaining seated at dinner feel overwhelming.

  • Your child may repeatedly perform certain actions, like arranging objects in a precise order, mimicking symmetrical movements, or asking the same questions over and over, in search of certainty and control.

Envision a world where your child thrives—feeling validated, in control, and confident. Together, we can pave the way to this new reality.

Your child’s path to understanding and growth

It may feel impossible now, but your child can learn to feel understood and manage their challenges. You can trust that your child will find their voice and navigate their world with greater ease. Together, we can make this journey towards healing and empowerment, and I'm here to guide you every step of the way.

Building Trust and Rapport

When working with children and teenagers, my primary goal is to create a safe, supportive space where your child feels heard, understood, and free to express their thoughts and feelings. Often, it’s you, the parent, who seeks out therapy, and your child may not yet recognize the need for change in their behaviors or symptoms. Therefore, establishing a trusting relationship and effective rapport is crucial.

In our sessions, your child will have dedicated time to explore their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. To create this safe environment, I often engage in play with younger children or spend time talking with kids and teens about their passions and interests. This helps them feel comfortable and more willing to open up.

Personalized Approach to Overcoming Obstacles

As we build this foundation, we can begin to address the specific challenges that are distressing to your child. For instance:

  • A perfectionistic teen may be overwhelmed by constant "shoulds" and stress.

  • A child with ADHD may be frustrated by adults getting upset and telling them they’re too impulsive and need to do a better job of staying on top of their schoolwork.

  • A child with OCD may be burdened by upsetting thoughts or lengthy bedtime rituals.

We’ll work together to understand how their symptoms manifest and what triggers them, exploring both successful and unsuccessful coping mechanisms. As we establish a trusting relationship, we can introduce strategies tailored to your child’s unique needs, abilities, and circumstances. My approach includes:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Helping children and teens distinguish between what they can and cannot control.

  • Mindfulness Techniques: Assisting them to stay present and non-judgmental about their thoughts and feelings.

  • Strengths-Based Approach: Identifying inherent strengths and talents to overcome obstacles.

  • Executive Functioning Skills: Teaching time management, organization, and focus to transform daily difficulties into opportunities for success.

Parental Involvement and Support

As needed, I work with parents, either separately or with your child, to provide you with tools that fit your family’s lifestyle. This enables you to effectively support your child and manage their behaviors. The end result is your child feels empowered to navigate their world with confidence and ease.

Frequently asked questions about Therapy for Children and Teenagers

FAQs

  • As a parent, you know your child best. Sometimes, you might notice changes in their mood or behavior—they’re more irritable than usual, a previously strong student is now struggling with schoolwork, or they seem more withdrawn and aren’t hanging out with friends as much. Other times, you might have ongoing concerns that haven’t resolved with age. Instead of "growing out" of these behaviors, your child might seem to be getting more entrenched in them as they get older. Anxiety attacks become more frequent, angry outbursts are harder to manage, or your child just can’t seem to keep track of their belongings. If you’re seeing these signs, it might be helpful to seek out therapy to support your child through these challenges. Therapy can provide a safe space for them to explore their feelings and develop coping strategies, ultimately helping them navigate their world more effectively.

  • When I work with elementary- and middle-school-aged children, I usually start sessions with a brief parent check-in to get a sense of how things are going. Then, I meet individually with your child for the remainder of the session. For older teenagers, I generally meet with them individually for the entire session, unless parents request time to discuss their concerns.

During individual sessions with your child or teenager, we focus on building rapport through play and conversations about their interests. I will explore your child’s or teen’s concerns, along with their awareness of parents’ concerns, to identify strategies that will help them feel better and provide validation for their experiences. We will also take time to celebrate achievements along the way.

I provide parent counseling as needed. This typically involves separate sessions with one or both parents to discuss your challenges in supporting your child’s well-being or managing their behaviors. At times, I’ll meet with both parents and the child together to facilitate difficult conversations, ensure everyone is on the same page with strategies, or work on problem-solving as a team.

  • The length of time it takes to see improvements in your child's or teenager’s mood and behavior can vary widely. Some kids and teens come in ready to talk about what’s distressing them, and for those individuals, they may experience a reduction in symptoms within weeks or months. Others may need time to feel comfortable, which necessitate a longer-term strategy focused initially on relationship-building. For those children, I work to create a safe space where they feel a sense of control and can take charge of their own lives. This process can last for several months or more. As the child or teen forms a solid relationship with me, this allows them to open up and share more over time. Patience and consistency are key, and I am committed to supporting your child throughout this journey.

  • When it comes to children and teens, I typically don't recommend medication as the first-line intervention. My primary focus is on supporting your child through therapy to help them develop the skills and strategies they need to manage their symptoms. However, if at any point we feel that medication might provide additional support, we can have a thorough discussion about its potential benefits and considerations.

As a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania, I cannot write prescriptions. If we determine that medication might be helpful, I can connect you with trusted psychiatrists in the Bucks County area, or your family doctor might also be able to prescribe the appropriate medication. With your written authorization, I will collaborate with your child's prescribing physician to ensure a coordinated approach to their care.

Rest assured, I am experienced in working with children who are already on medication, and I will integrate therapy with their medical treatment to provide comprehensive support. Our goal is always to find the best approach for your child's unique needs, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.

  • The first step is to reach out to me so we can schedule a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation. This initial conversation allows us to connect and discuss your concerns about your child. It also helps me to understand your aspirations for therapy and gives you a chance to ask any questions you might have. If we feel that I’m a good fit for your child and family, we will discuss how to talk to them about counseling, schedule the initial sessions, and begin your child or teenager’s journey toward well-being.

It's time to help your child feel understood and empowered to navigate life with confidence.
